Where Veterans Reclaim their Honor
In 1987, two high school seniors in Albuquerque, New Mexico, began a journey that would span decades of love, sacrifice, and service. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, while she pursued her education at the University of New Mexico. Their early years were marked by separation and uncertainty—a breakup during boot camp, followed by a realization of enduring love that led to their engagement in 1990.
They married in Bremerton, Washington, just before he deployed with the USS Nimitz to serve in Desert Storm. While he was away, she worked multiple jobs, struggling financially but committed to building a life together. Their reunion was filled with hope, though life as a military family continued to demand resilience and adaptability.
After transferring to Texas, they resettled in Corpus Christi. She found purpose working with equine athletes, while he transitioned from active duty in 1995 to pursue a career in aviation through Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. In 1996, he was accepted into the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia, with aspirations of becoming a pilot. However, during training, he experienced a severe onset of anxiety, depression, and was eventually diagnosed with PTSD.
Despite these challenges, he completed his military service in logistics and was honorably discharged in 1998. They moved to Phoenix, Arizona, to begin civilian life—an often difficult transition. Over the years, he held various roles in engineering, banking, and restaurant management, but struggled with long-term stability due to lingering mental health challenges.
In pursuit of meaningful work, he earned a Master’s Degree in Business and later a Master’s in Occupational Therapy, with a goal to help others facing similar struggles. Unfortunately, even a promising position at the Veterans Administration Hospital in 2024 ended in disappointment when he was dismissed rather than supported during a mental health crisis. He currently works part-time in home health, continuing to search for balance and healing.
Their shared experience inspired the creation of SAVETS—a secure, veteran-exclusive online platform designed to foster community, provide support, and offer vital resources for veterans navigating life after service.
